WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Gas utility workers from Wisconsin Public Service have returned home from the east coast. The group spent just over two weeks helping gas customers in New York affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Kelly Zagrzebski from WPS says the four crews from the Oshkosh, Stevens Point, Green Bay and Wausau service departments arrived home Sunday.
She says most of the work performed was inspecting and relighting appliances.
Zagrzebski says anytime your home or business is damaged in a storm, someone should inspect the appliances before turning them back on, especially gas appliances. "You're not sure what the water got into, or how something might have been damaged. Something may have shifted. You really want to make sure that you have a qualified person take a look at your system before you re-light it."
WPS has no immediate plans to deploy additional crews to the east coast, but Zagrzebski says that can change as quick as the weather.
Previously, WPS had sent electrical technicians to assist with the storm damage. They have also returned home.
