Honors-student dies in weather-related crash

BRIGHTON, Wis (WSAU)  An honor student at Salem Central High School died over the weekend, after being one of three teens hurt in a two-car crash in Kenosha County. 16-year-old Casey Petricek died Saturday afternoon, almost a full day after her car slammed into an oncoming van on Highway 142 in the town of Brighton. Sheriff's deputies said her car lost control on a curve, swerved into the opposite lane, and collided with a van driven by a 17-year-old Trevor girl. The driver and her sister were both treated at a hospital for minor injuries, and were later released. Officials said Petricek was apparently speeding, but the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities in several Wisconsin counties stayed busy Sunday as a winter storm moved in and created slick spots. Officials say most of the incidents were slide-offs with no major injuries reported. Some schools decided to cancel before students went to bed. More than a foot fell in the Hudson area. The National Weather Service says temperatures in the single digits are accompanied by 20 to 30 mile per hour winds. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is urging people to stay off the roads, especially in the northwestern part of the state.
