APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The city of Appleton will not allow urban chicken farms. After months of debate, the city council voted 5 to 11 Wednesday night against rolling out a chicken ordinance that would allow up to four chickens, no roosters, in a coup on a residents property. Residents who came out overwhelming testified against urban chickens. Concerns from residents and alderman focused on health issues. The annual licenses would also add more work for staff that is already pinched. Up to four hours could be spent on an application. Enforcement also became an issue. Appleton Police Chief Pete Helein says his department is already handing 2,000 animal complaints a year. Last year, Green Bay enacted an urban chicken ordinance.
