COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Human Services, Courts and Law Enforcement people from seven counties in South Central Michigan and Northeast Indiana gathered Wednesday in Coldwater for an all day seminar titled “Understanding a Domestic Violence Batterer”.
David Garvin, a nationally renowned expert on the issue, conducted the forum. He started the day proclaiming there is absolutely no place for domestic violence in any community and he wasn’t in the mood to hear any excuses for such behavior. He pointed to the example of a bumper sticker some may have seen that reads, “There is no excuse for domestic violence”.
Garvin said he begged to differ with that phrase because he believes there’s way too many excuses for domestic violence. He reminded everyone there’s no acceptable excuse for it, but there’s tons of excuses. In his words, batterers will come up with excuses like there’s no tomorrow.
Garvin believes preventing domestic violence has to start right where we live with your insistence that we make those who dish out domestic violence accountable for their actions as well as your insistence that this is something that the town you call home will not tolerate. There were about 200 in the audience for the event sponsored by the Branch County Coalition against Domestic Violence
