Former Green Bay Congressman named co-chair for possible Thompson Senate run

UNDATED, WI (WTAQ) - Former Congressman Mark Green was named today as a co-chair to Tommy Thompson’s possible U-S Senate campaign for next year.

The Republican Thompson, a former governor and Bush health secretary, is expected to decide soon whether he’ll run for the seat to be given up by retiring Democrat Herb Kohl.

For now, Thompson has state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen working on his possible campaign – along with former Assembly Speaker John Gard, ex-state Treasurer Cate Zeuske, and former Thompson aide Jim Klauser.

Green praised Thompson’s 14-year record as governor – and he said Thompson would provide “conservative leadership” in Washington.

Green represented the Green Bay area in Congress for eight years before he ran unsuccessfully for governor against Jim Doyle in 2006.

After that, he served almost two years as a U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania.
