No new trial for self-help guru in sweat lodge deaths

CAMP VERDE, AZ (WTAQ) - A judge in Arizona said no Wednesday to a new trial for James Arthur Ray.

He’s the self-help guru convicted of causing the deaths of a Milwaukee man and two others during a spiritual ceremony in a heated sweat-lodge in 2009.

Judge Warren Darrow refused to buy the defense’s argument that the prosecution denied Ray a fair trial by making so many errors of misconduct during his original three-month trial earlier this year.

The defense admitted some mistakes, but they said none would have changed the verdict.

Ray was convicted of three counts of negligent homicide, for causing the death of 40-year-old James Shore of Milwaukee and two others at Ray’s “Spiritual Warrior” festival near Sedona Arizona.

Ray is awaiting sentencing. He could get anything from probation to nine years behind bars.
