Foreign policy expert leaving UW Madison for TX

MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - UW Madison is losing one of its most highly-regarded foreign policy experts.

Jeremi Suri is moving to the University of Texas in Austin, where he’ll become the Mack Brown Chair for Global Leadership.

He says it will give him more of a chance to use his analysis of history to improve modern policy-making. He’s getting a nice raise to $220,000 a year from his current $113,000.

But Suri tells the Madison Capital Times that low morale at the UW also played a part in his decision to leave. It’s said it’s been a “hard year” at Madison, with political attacks on the university and the governor’s insistence to make workers pay more for their pensions and health insurance. Suri said there’s a lot of uncertainty and worry among UW staffers – and it definitely influenced his decision to move on.

Suri has won numerous awards for his work.

You might have heard Suri’s analysis on the night Osama bin Laden was killed. Suri explained the delicate combination of intelligence, diplomacy, and military action needed to bring down the world’s most wanted terrorist.

Suri also made news in 2008 when he resigned from the UW Madison board, saying it became too much of a rubber-stamp for the athletic department’s leaders.
