ST. PAUL, Min. (MNN) - There's a short lull at the State Capitol Friday after a hectic week when the House and Senate passed most of their major budget-cutting bills. Following a Senate vote on Thursday, both chambers have now passed their K-through-12 education funding bills which represent the largest portion of the state budget -- about 40-percent. They'll likely go into negotiations next week to work out their differences, but it's doubtful they'll get agreement with Governor Dayton, who opposes Republican proposals to freeze teacher salaries and limit collective bargaining. The Senate also passed its bill this week trimming health and human services spending, but the House has yet to do so -- and we can expect a "marathon battle royale" probably in the middle of next week. Most insiders agree this round of budget-cutting bills has little chance of getting the nod from Governor Dayton and negotiations would likely gear up again after the Passover-Easter break.
