FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WTAQ) - A letter of thanks has been written to the Fond du Lac community by the city's police chief.
Tony Barthuly thanked the community after the recent standoff and shooting which left one officer dead and two others, along with a police dog, injured.
In the letter, Barthuly wrote: “The constant flow of flowers, cards, signs, emails, phone calls, plants, food and refreshments continues to be very much appreciated,” Barthuly wrote. “The tragic loss of Officer Craig Birkholz will be forever branded in our hearts. Despite this, all of your thoughts and gestures have been an outstanding tribute to Craig, his wife Ashley, his family and the members of the Fond du Lac Police Department.”
“The tribute our community gave to fallen Officer Craig Birkholz and the support given to injured officers Ryan Williams, Zach Schultz and K9 Grendel will never be forgotten.”
“I cannot express the joy and awe I have regarding Officer Williams’ amazing recovery and release from the hospital. The strength and courage he has shown is an inspiration to all who wear the badge and those who face medical challenges. The recovery K9 Grendel has made is just as impressive and goes to show how animals really do mirror the traits of their owners.”
