FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WTAQ) - A complaint has been filed with the state Justice Department that accuses state Senate Republican Randy Hopper of not living in his district.
Dawn Meyer filed the complaint, which comes in the midst of an effort to recall the Fond du Lac lawmaker.
Campaign spokesman Jeff Harvey says Hopper is indeed living in his district. He rented a Fond du Lac apartment after filing for divorce last August. The divorce case is still pending.
Harvey says the residency issue is part of a smear campaign by those pushing for Hopper’s recall. He’s 1 of 8 Republican senators targeted for voting in favor of the bill that virtually ends collective bargaining for most public employee unions in Wisconsin.
Eight Democrats are also targeted for fleeing to Illinois for 3 weeks in an unsuccessful attempt to block a vote on the measure.
A large number of unionized state prison employees live in Hopper’s district, and state Democrats say the effort to collect signatures for a recall election has gone well so far.
