State gets $806k for combating against 20 ft tall lake weed getting

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The federal government will help Wisconsin fight off an aggressive weed that can grow up to 20-feet tall.

The EPA has given the state $806,000 for herbicide spraying against phragmites. The invasive weeds are found along Lake Michigan and the Bay of Green Bay.

DNR conservation biologist Heidi Springborn said phragmites arrived in the US in the hulls of lake-going vessels – and they’ve been known to suck up native species and obscure views of the waterfront.

Once it gets in, Springborn says it’s hard to get out.

The DNR held informational meetings on the weed in Marinette and Oconto last month.
Other sessions are being held Tuesday in Suamico, and Thursday in Sturgeon Bay
