MADISON, Wis. (WHBL) - The State Republican Party confirmed today that it’s encouraging what it calls “protest candidates” to run against Democrats in recall primaries against G-O-P senators. The G-O-P is pushing fake Democrats to run against real Democrats in primaries – so Republican senators Luther Olsen and Randy Hopper and possibly others would not have to face recall challengers for an extra month while the primaries are being fought out. Meanwhile, the state Democratic Party called on the Republicans to end their quote, “Nixonian dirty tricks.” Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller planned to hammer that point out at a news conference this afternoon. Stephan Thompson, the state G-O-P’s executive director, said the Republican senators are busy acting on a state budget while their Democratic opponents are already campaigning. And Thompson says the G-O-P senators deserve an extra month because they’re being targeted for doing their jobs – while the three Democratic senators who are targeted ran off to Illinois. Hopper said he had nothing to do with this. And Senate Republican Dan Kapanke of La Crosse denied arranging a spoiler candidate in his district.
