Sheboygan Mayor given warning about scuffle in bar, claimed he didn't start it

ELKHART LAKE, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Elkhart Lake gave Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan a verbal warning after he got into a tavern scuffle last weekend.

Chief Randy Boeldt said there were no arrests because nobody complained to his department – and there was no victim, since there were no reports of injuries.

Ryan has been involved in three major alcohol-related episodes since being elected as Sheboygan’s mayor in 2009. He admits being an alcoholic, and he’s had two relapses since first getting treatment.

Ryan first said he only had a couple drinks in Elkhart Lake last weekend – but he later said he could not refute reports of a three-day binge.

A police report released yesterday said Ryan was the aggressor in the tavern scuffle. The mayor told WHBL Radio he was involved in the fight, but he didn’t start it.

On Wednesday night, the Sheboygan City Council’s committee-of-the-whole asked Ryan to resign. If he doesn’t, the Council said it would consider a censure or removal if a complaint is filed.

Ryan says he won’t quit. He insists he can manage the city better than anyone he knows. The Council is scheduled to consider a resolution on Monday night calling for the mayor’s resignation.
