MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - A federal court in Milwaukee said Wednesday it would not take over the job of drawing Wisconsin’s new state legislative and congressional districts.

Majority Republicans in the Legislature approved maps they drafted earlier this month.

But even before the maps were made public, a group headed by former state Senate Democratic leader Judy Robson of Beloit asked the judges to draw the new lines to make sure they’re fair to both parties.

But three judges in Milwaukee’s federal court said today there are no special circumstances to warrant what they called an extraordinary remedy of taking away the job of redistricting from the Legislature.

Another federal lawsuit is still pending which claims the maps approved by the Republicans are unconstitutional.
