APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) -  A Kimberly man has pled not guilty to charges he abandoned his newborn daughter near a dumpster behind a church.

18-year-old Benjamin LaMarche is scheduled to go to trial Sept. 14.

He and the baby’s mother, 17-year-old Nadia Zahirudin are charged with felony child abandonment. 

Police say Zahirudin told them she tried hiding her pregnancy. The teen told authorities she was scared and wanted to get rid of the infant before her uncle, who she lives with, came home.

If convicted, both partents could spend up to 10 years in prison.
