Hoover vacuums recalled for fire hazard

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Around 142,000 Hoover WindTunnel Canister Vacuums are being recalled voluntarily because of a potential fire and burn hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Wednesday.

The Hoover WindTunnel Bagless Canister Vacuum model S3755 can short circuit in the power cord between the wand and the power nozzle, exposing consumers to potential fire and shock, the CPSC said in a statement.

It said even if the China-made vacuum is disconnected, the device may still malfunction.

Sixty-Nine incidents have been reported, one of which resulted in fire and smoke damage and another two resulting in carpet damage. One minor injury has been reported.

The recalled vacuums are sliver and black and were sold nationwide at department stores, independent retailers and online between March 2003 and December 2008.

Those who purchased the vacuum should contact Hoover for a free repair, the CPSC said.
