OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Oshkosh say two men who allegedly severely beat up a man outside a bar on Christmas Day are facing hate crime charges.
Cops say Jake Immel-Rhode and Lyall Ziebell met the victim at PJ's Bar on Oregon Street around 2:15 a.m.
The victim had offered to buy the 20-year-old's a shot of liquor in exchange for a cigarette, according to the criminal complaint.
The men went into the bar, had their drink and then went back outside. That's when Immel-Rhode and Ziebell allegedly attacked the victim. breaking his jaw and causing a brain injury. The victim told police he was attacked because he's gay. The criminal complaint also states the suspects robbed a grocery store after the attack. If convicted on all charges, the suspects face 23-and-a-half years in prison.
