Police: no hate-crime charges in State Fair assaults

WEST ALLIS, Wis (WSAU) Police in West Allis says there will not be hate crime charges filed in any of the arrests they made during opening night of the Wisconsin State Fair.

Police have released details on only a handful of arrests that were made last Thursday, and say none of those cases have the elements needed for hate crime prosecution.

Police believe the incidents happened as a series of black-on-black fights on the fair midway. There were reports that some of the fights spilled over into the parking lot. More than two-dozen arrests were reported.

Several white fairgoers say groups of black teens targeted them specifically in the parking lot as they were leaving the fairgrounds. In many of those cases, police weren’t in the area and no arrests were made.

Governor Walker ordered the State Patrol to the fairgrounds the following day, and there have been no similar incidents since then. The fair has also instituted new rules against unaccompanied minors on the fairgrounds after 5pm.
