House Democrats who shirked their responsibilities and fled the Indiana Statehouse for a five-week walkout will soon be payingtheir imposed fines.
State Auditor Tim Berry said he’s been instructed to withhold 20 percent of their weekly per-diem checks until the $120,000 fines imposed during the walkout are paid off.House Democrats still plan to contest the collection effort and are questioning its legality. Clyde Kersey of Terre Haute said House Democrat leaders don’t question the authority to impose the fines, but do question whether its legal to collect them by withholding their pay.
