Fire Chief Lobbies To Keep Stations Open

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - As he tries to get Sheboygan’s Common Council to lift the Fire Department hiring freeze, Chief Jeff Hermann is also working to keep all the City’s fire stations open.

With formal action expected Monday night on lifting the hiring freeze, enabling the department to bring four firefighter/paramedic’s on board to replace eight recently retired personnel, some Council members want the Southside station closed in exchange for their approval. Chief Hermann has previously stated in numerous Committee and Council meetings that closing a station is feasible, but would drastically alter the department’s response times.

If the Southside station were shuttered, residents on the City’s far south side could see average response times double.
