Former Tiger’s catcher Pudge Rodriguez and the Washington Nationals are in Detroit to open a 3-game series tonight at Comerica Park. Both teams had the day off yesterday with the day of rest helping a couple of Tiger regulars get back in the starting lineup. Magglio Ordonez will return after missing six games with a strained oblique while Carlos Guillen missed his start Sunday with a calf injury.
Detroit, which is coming off a 3-game sweep at home over the Pirates, won’t have to face in this series National’s rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg, who improved to 2-and-0 Sunday with 8 more strikeouts in a win at Cleveland.
Max Scherzer will start tonight for Detroit. Rodriguez, who signed a two year deal with the Nationals in December, is off to one of his best starts, batting .338. The 38-year old Rodriguez is just 242 hits shy of reaching three-thousand hits for his career. The Nationals have a 31-and-33 record while Detroit is 33-and-29.
It was a light day of action yesterday in the majors with the White Sox and Cubs also idle and just four inter-league games on the schedule.
