DELAFIELD, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Common Council in Delafield has shut down a shooting range where a bullet was fired that hit a pregnant diner sitting a quarter-mile away.
The aldermen voted 5 to 1 Thursday night to suspend the operating permit for the Hartland Sportsman’s Club. It was already under fire for loud noise when 31-year-old Raluca Buznea was grazed by a bullet from the club in late April. Her unborn baby was not hurt.
Prosecutors found no criminal violation – but police said a berm at the facility was not sufficient to stop bullets from leaving the target range. And opponents had cited 5 other incidents in which bullets left the facility in recent years.
Club attorney Jon Wilcox called the Council’s vote disappointing. He said the club would most likely appeal the shutdown – and the club’s board will meet soon to decide what to do.
The club could apply for a new operating permit, which observers say would impose tight restrictions and mandatory improvements to keep bullets from leaving the site.
