MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - It was a year ago Wednesday when 2 Milwaukee police officers were shot by a man in broad daylight near the city’s main entertainment district.
Today, officers Bryan Norberg and Graham Kunisch are back at work part-time. Both are in a community prosecution unit in Milwaukee’s second police district.
19-year-old Julius Burton was on a bicycle when the officers stopped him. Surveillance video showed that Burton shot the patrolmen at close range as they tried to restrain him. The 22-year-old Norberg was wounded in his face and shoulder. The 27-year-old Kunisch took a bullet in his jaw that went up to his skull, causing nerve damage among other things.
Milwaukee Police spokeswoman Anne Schwartz said the officers’ return to work is, “truly a miracle.” Burton was sentenced in February to 40 years in prison and 40 years of extended supervision upon his release.
