MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s dairy cows stayed busier than their national counterparts last month. The state’s milk production rose by 4.3 percent in December, while the national output dropped by 0.9 percent from a year ago. Wisconsin farmers made just over 2.1 billion pounds of milk during the month. California – the nation’s #1 milk state – produced 4.6 percent less than a year ago, at almost 3.3 billion pounds. Wisconsin farmers added 4,000 cows last month, while the national herd dropped by over a quarter-million. And the state’s milk per cow increased by 65 pounds – more than twice the national increase. For last year as a whole, national milk production fell by 0.4 percent.
