MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Wisconsin Innocence Project at UW-Madison is trying to win a new murder trial for Terry Vollbrecht. The 48-year-old Vollbrecht has served 20 years of a life prison sentence for the slaying of Angela Hackl in Sauk County in 1987. A judge is in the middle of a 4-day hearing in which key evidence is being reviewed. Charles Fox, an investigator for the state Public Defender's office, said he did not follow up on several leads in 1989 which implicated other people in the murder. He said Vollbrecht's attorney told him not to pursue that angle.
Meanwhile, Innocence Project co-director Keith Findley says a new jury needs to hear new evidence involving a former Sauk-Prairie police officer. But assistant attorney general Gary Feryberg argued that it's hard to get witnesses to accurately talk about what happened almost a quarter-century ago. And Feryberg said Vollbrecht got a full and fair trial the first time.
