SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - At a joint meeting between the City of Sheboygan’s Public Protection and Safety and Finance Committee’s, the topic of closing fire stations was again discussed.
Different proposals for addressing the Sheboygan Fire Department’s staffing needs were debated Wednesday night, with a select group of City Council members supporting the notion of closing a fire station. Those saying they’d support closing a station in their district include District Three Alderperson Julie Kath, both District Four Aldermen Joseph Heidemann and Jim Bohren, District Five Alderperson Jeanne Kliejunas and District Seven Alderman Tom Bowers. Fire Chief Jeff Hermann says operationally the department could manage with a shuttered station; however the citizens would certainly bear the brunt of that decision.
Faced with recent and near future retirements, the Fire Department is short at least seven firefighter/paramedics.
