MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - You won’t hear “On Wisconsin” if you stay up to watch the Badgers’ football opener late Saturday night.
That’s because the marching band doesn’t have the money to make the trip to Las Vegas, where the Badgers will play UNLV in a 10 p.m. kickoff.
The team has played in Vegas before – and the band has always rounded up the cash to go along. But this year, they’re about $40 to $50,000 short. Director Mike Leckrone says the recession has put a crimp on donors.
And because it’s Labor Day Weekend, he says Vegas hotels are less willing to provide complimentary hotel rooms for the band. Leckrone says any money raised for Vegas will go toward a bowl game trip late in the season, should the Badgers be eligible.
