MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The state government’s health care program for the poor might be scaled back if a Republican is elected governor.

Scott Walker and Mark Neumann both supported reductions in BadgerCare Plus during a debate Wednesday night in Milwaukee. Walker, the Milwaukee County Executive, said BadgerCare was supposed to a temporary safety net for those going from welfare to work. And instead, he says it has become an entitlement program with fraud and abuse. Walker said he would support a time limit for being on BadgerCare.

Neumann did not endorse a time limit. But the former congressman said the pressure on entitlement programs is “near a breaking point.” He said more jobs are needed so people can get off BadgerCare – and the program could then focus on those with disabilities.

Walker and Neumann did not have many disagreements during the town hall forum, which came in advance of their September 14th primary. Both candidates said they would reduce mandates on public schools, so they could spend more of their money in the classroom.

Walker said he would try to bring back limits on pay teacher pay raises. And he said he would wait to push for wholesale changes in the school funding formula until the economy gets better.
