MUKWONAGO, Wis. (WTAQ) - The state’s education department has scheduled a hearing for next Friday on a complaint against Mukwonago High School’s Indian nickname and mascot.

Recent graduate Rain Koepke filed the complaint, saying the Indians’ name and logo caused part of his harassment as a Native American. Mukwonago school officials said they’re cooperating with the state’s investigation, but they deny any conduct in violation of the state’s legal guidelines involving the use of the Indians’ name.

It’s the 3rd complaint filed under a recent law which allowed the state to order schools to drop their Indian monikers, if the state finds they’re discriminatory.

The Osseo-Fairchild School District was ordered a few weeks ago to drop its Chieftains name and logo. The Kewaunee School Board voted this week to drop the Indians’ name, thus avoiding a state hearing on its complaint.
