LA CROSSE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Great River Road is finally complete. The road follows the Mississippi River from Minnesota through the western edge of Wisconsin, and all the way down to Louisiana. Friday, over 60 members of the River Parkway Commission are celebrating the addition of the final segments at plantations in Louisiana. The 2 day party began Thursday.
The commission was established in 1992, when the upper parts of the Great River Road were named a National Scenic Byway. The Federal Highway Administration designated the final segments last fall in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Tourism officials in Louisiana said commission members specifically wanted to see the road’s lower reaches – and that’s why the bash is being held in its southern-most state. In Wisconsin, the Great River Road mostly follows Highway 35 from Prescott to near Dubuque.
