WAUSAU (WRN) - First, he criticized the Obama White House over reporting errors in the economic stimulus package. Now, Congressman Dave Obey says if the war is important enough to fight, a new surtax should be imposed on, in Obey’s words, “people who can afford it.” The Wausau Democrat says the $900 billion cost of fighting there will stop everything being done at home to rebuild the economy. To pay for more troops in Afghanistan, Obey wants a graduated surtax on income. Tax increases would range from 1 percent for the lowest wage earners, to 5 percent for the most wealthy. Obey doesn’t think additional troops in Afghanistan will solve the problems there.
