Movie Trailer Friday

by Matt Z

A couple of movies open in wide release today, the first being After Earth.  Will Smith teams up with his son Jaden, once again, and instead of being in pursuit of happiness, they are in pursuit of survival:

I'm really ticked that my father wasn't a big time actor when I was growing up and even more upset that he didn't hang with a DJ of any kind.  By the way, critics are ripping this movie apart.   You've been warned.

The other wide release this weekend is Now You See Me.  If you like illusions and heists, this should be right up your alley.  It's a really good cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine.  But just because you have good actors doesn't mean you have a good movie.  Critics like it more than the Smith family flick , but not much more:

Here are the other movies in limited release this weekend:

Hangout with friends all summer, check.  Build an awesome tree fort/house, check.  Make your own rules, check.  Don't you wish you had that kind of summer while growing up?  I'm really excited for The Kings of Summer.

The East is an espionage thriller that stars Ellen Page and a guy who looks just like Jack White, but isn't Jack White (:35 mark of the trailer).

Shadow Dancer is the best reviewed movie of the weekend and if it's as good as another movie that deals with Belfast and the IRA, The Boxer, I'm in.  The movie is directed by James Marsh who also directed the fantastic documentary Man on Wire (if you haven't had the pleasure, check it out).  Also, when it comes to Clive Owen, if he's in a movie, chances are I'm going to watch it with no questions asked.

It's an alien blue grass band, what's not to like?  Anyone else getting a really strong Tenacious D vibe?  You should be, Future Folk is a real "alien" duo that performs in NYC.
