Radio Stations Reject Oneida Advertising Over Redskin Name

by Jerry Bader

It would be tempting to applaud this move because I disagree with the call to change the name. But consider the precedent this sets. One of the station says it doesn't think paid advertising is beneficial to its listeners or the debate. Wouldn't you love to ask them if they only accept advertising they consider beneficial to their audience? And how do they decide that? And if they rejected pro-life advertising because they didn't think it was beneficial to their audience, would conservative pro-lifers be okay with that?

These are stations who know that a majority of their listeners were going to disagree with these advertisements and they didn't want to put up with the backlash. That's a chilling precedent for issue oriented advertising from any ideological viewpoint.
