NLRB Says College Players Can Unionize

by Jerry Bader

This is a stunning ruling. No, not stunning that the NLRB regional director approved it, but the result (fallout) could be stunning. It will appealed, but for the moment college football players are students and athletes. I agree that it's wrong for the abilities of college athletes to fuel billion dollar industries and not reap the benefits.

But I don't believe this strategy is the way to fix that. The key might be incremental change. Let's start with protection for athletes who contribute to the profits of college football receiving meaningful protection from injuries that could preclude a pro career and other benefits. Even if the full NLRB upholds this, it'll go to the Supreme Court. If it stands, college sports as they've always been known will be history.
