Bring it on....

by Jerry Bader

Last week, the watchdog group "Public Citizen" requested an ethics investigation of Representative Tom Petri, a Fond du Lac Republican representing Wisconsin's 6th Congressional District. The call came after Gannett Wisconsin Media reported that Petri purchased hundred of thousands of dollars in Oshkosh Corp. stock and then worked in Congress to help the company retain a $3 billion dollar defense contract. GMW reporting indicates Petri's stock value grew 30% as a result.

Petri has fired back. In a news release today, Petri says he sent a letter to the Chariman and Ranking member of the House Ethics committee, requsting a formal review of the allegations. Petri is quoted in the release as saying:

"Articles recently question my ownership of stock in companies and my actions on their behalf." "It is my honor and duty to advocate on behalf of those who live and work in my area: I am distressed by the innuendo in these articles."

"To end any questions, I am request that the Committee formally review and report back."

Here is Petri's letter:

Chairman

Committee on Ethics

Hon. Linda T. Sanchez Ranking Member Committee on Ethics

1015 Longworth House Office Building

Washington,DC 20515

Dear Chairman Conaway and Ranking Member Sanchez:

Articles (enclosed) recently questioned my ownership of stock in companies and my actions on their behalf.

It is my honor and duty to advocate on behalf of those who live and work in my area; I

am distressed by the innuendo in the articles:

• My investments have been reported in annual disclosure forms submitted to you and on public file.

• My actions as a stockholder are no different than any other stockholder based solely on public information.

• My advocacy has been undertaken openly. I have, from time to time, contacted the Committee for guidance on these issues.

It is regrettable, but not surprising, that many are confused by the articles. To end any questions, I am requesting that the Committee formally review the matter and report back.

Thank you for your attention.

Respectfully submitted,

Thomas E. Petri

Member of Congress
