Kudos to Andy Nicholson for questioning this. As for the "he got three estimates" defense; so what? Why doesn't the city have a policy capping moving expenses? My company paid to move me ten years ago. There was a cap on how much they would pay. The rest was on me. If the low estimate was $25k, would they have paid that too? Also, these reimbursements often are prorated based on distance. In other words, you get more for moving from Seattle to Green Bay than from Chicago.
One possibility would be for the city to set a percentage of total expenses to be paid, accompanied with a cap. I haven't moved in nearly 10 years, but I agree with Andy; let's see an itemized list for this price tag.
