I've witnessed some pretty bad playoff losses in my time, Brett Favre's six pack of picks in St. Louis, the Cowboys dominant teams in Dallas but this was men against boys at Candlestick Park and the man was Colin Kaepernick. He put up a record smashing game in San Francisco's 45-31 romp that wasn't nearly as close as the score. The second year pro from Nevada, making his 8th NFL start and first in the post season, accounted for 444 yards, BY HIMSELF! 181 on the ground, most ever by a QB in any NFL game, another 263 in the air. The Niners crushed the Pack with 579 total yards, 29 first downs and over 38 minutes in time of posession. And to think his day started horribly, when Sam Shields picked off a pass and raced 52 yards for a 7-0 Green Bay lead two minutes into the game. Kaepernick got it even on the next series with a 20 yard touchdown run on third and 8. Late in the first, DuJuan Harris ripped off a beautiful 18 yard TD run to put the Packers up 14-7. It was all down Nob Hill from there. After getting a defensive stop, Jeremy Ross muffed a punt that was recovered at the Packer 9. Another third down conversion, from the 12, had Kaepernick find Michael Crabtree crossing over the middle to get the game even. Then Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson had a miscommunication on a broken play. Rodgers threw it deep down the middle but Jordy was breaking off his route. Tarrell Brown intercepted and weaved his way back upfield for 39 yards. San Francisco cashed in the turnover again with Crabtree making another 20 yard touchdown grab. The Packers quickly answered with James Jones hauling in a 20 yard scoring pass but David Akers nailed a 36 yard field goal on the final play of the half to make it 24-21 Frisco. In the third, the Packers drove 76 yards but had to settle for a 31 yard Mason Crosby field goal and despite getting badly outplayed, the game was even at 24. Kaepernick then delivered the knockout punch. On yet another read option play, the Milwaukee native got loose around the right end and sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown, Frank Gore spiced his 119 yard game with a two yard TD run on the first play of the 4th quarter and even backup Anthony Dixon got into the act with a 2 yard TD to make it 45-24. Rodgers connected with Greg Jennings for a consolation 3 yard TD with :57 left to play. It will be the 49ers playing in the NFC title game for the second year in a row while the Packers take the red eye home with a 12-6, NFC North title only season. It was uncanny how poorly the defense played the run, charging inside on the fakes, often not even knowing Kaepernick had the ball. Colin outpassed Rodgers 263-257. Aaron was sacked only once but the offense just never had the ball enough, only 56 plays in 21:59 of posession time. The 2nd quarter turnovers were turned into 14 points and San Fran was a silly 8 of 13 (62%) on third down. It was a long night for such a long trip.
Donald Driver was active for what may have been his final game as a Packer. There was a lot of consternation over him being in sweats each of the last 2 weeks but he rarely played on offense and was relegated to the punt return team. Driver said after the game he's not sure what his plans are.
John Dorsey is leaving the team. The Director of Football Operations was hired Sunday as the new general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, replacing Scott Pioli and joining Andy Reid, the new head coach. Dorsey, the former linebacker and scout, served four tenures with the Packers, a total of 23 years. He was also with Mike Holmgren in Seattle,
