Rain chased fans away and the team into the Don Hutson Center for Friday morning's shells practice. A few brave souls donned umbrellas to peer through a couple of open doors at the north end of the building. The highlight play was a tough, over the shoulder touchdown catch covering about 55 yards by Randall Cobb from Aaron Rodgers during one of the team periods. On the same play, the first scuffle of camp broke out in the trenches. I was near the end zone and didn't get a good look at who was involved but a fight always gets the team shouting and the coaches running away from the pile, just in case. The most vocal player of the day goes to second round pick Jerrell Worthy of Michigan State. On back to back plays, he was loud and demonstrative about penetrating through the line of scrimmage. Even older players, like Charles Woodson, appreciate the energy level the newcomers bring to the table.
The first camp injury of note occured to tight end Jermichael Finley. He suffered what Mike McCarthy called a mild concussion on Thursday and he will be withheld from practice at least until next week. Unrestricted free agent Anthony Hargrove was absent, McCarthy said he had a personal matter to attend to and should be back in town Friday night to attend Saturday's practice.
McCarthy insists he doesn't have just 11 starters on either side of the ball. Just to give backups quality reps at practice, there is plenty of rotation. For instance, during the defensive blitz drill, it was Robert Francois and Jamari Lattimore working at inside linebacker with the rest of the first team defense for a series.
Saturday's practice will have a noticeably different feel to it, the pads come on for the first time in camp at 8:15 on Ray Nitschke field.
