I'll briefly explain this story, but it's easiest to listen to the podcasts from this morning's show, that are included below. A Kimberly High School athlete, Miriam Scholl, was photographed by the Appleton Post-Crescent during a hurdling meet. The PC then used her image in commercial material without her or her parent's consent or knowledge.
The WIAA this week informed her father that she was being suspended from athletics because this violates WIAA rules, even though she had no knowledge of it. After my producer, Jason Miller, starting making calls to the PC and the WIAA, the father told us on the show this morning that things started to move. you can hear the entire story below.
We broke this story thanks to Jason's hard work and I'm glad we were able to help. We learned this afternoon that the WIAA will be immediately restoring the eligibility of this athlete and one from Neenah who was included in the shot, after Gannett explained the situation to WIAA. I've also learned Gannett is claiming that "it was brought to their attention this week" that the images were used in an advertising campaign. As you'll hear in the interview, the father says he's been dueling with Gannett for months on this and that they told him "it's our image and we'll do with it as we with.
Gannett should be ashamed of its behavior in this matter but is instead trying to look like the hero in getting these girls eligibility restored. And the WIAA rule is idiotic; why should you be punished for something out of your control.
