This was shared with me this morning by a listener who wrote from the heart and, in my opinion, produced a masterpiece. I plan on sharing this on the air this morning:
Years ago we had a dog who, despite our best efforts, was dying. Because he weighed 140# and we couldn't easily get him to the vet, the vet came to our home to put the dog down. We waited with the dog on the front porch. When the vet walked up the sidewalk, the dog started wagging its tail and I thought, "you foolish dog, you don't know what's coming." I, however, had a heart that was melting like wax.
I can't get that same thought out of my mind about the election. Last night I watch on TV a sea of faces all grinning widely, swaying back and forth waving their flags in celebration of the Obama win and I thought, "You foolish people, you don't know what's coming." I, however, have a heart that's melting like wax.
I'd say "God help us" but it seems He's allowing America to have what America insists on like He let the Hebrews in the dessert have their quail until they gagged on it... and there will be plenty of gagging to come. We're headed into a 4-year+ economic stomach flu that we may never recover from.
I can understand the people electing Obama in 2008 when he turned their hearts with big promises and charismatic grins. He was a gift yet unwrapped that offered unproven hopes of great awesomeness. But this time the wrappings had been removed and the people knew full well what they were getting, and they still wanted it. That half of our nation is getting too heavy for the rest of us to lift out of the pit, despite our best efforts. I can't brush it off as a McCain-type of fiasco because this was a decent effort. (Yes, the Romney camp could've run a better campaign- would it have been enough to sway a people bent on feeding their foolishnesses?)
So here we sit this morning stunned and wondering where to go from here. Superstorm Sandy's connection to the election seems fitting because for a while now many of us were asking the Lord to change the course of the economic storm and we had hopes that He might. This morning, however, it seems the answer is "no" and we now have to face the fact that the storm is going to hit. We have to turn our minds from what could have been to the frightening prospects of what's coming.
Where do we start? I feel like conservatives are a bunch of deer in the headlights this morning. Were paralyzed by disappointment and I guess at some point we better shake it off and figure out how to start boarding up windows and bagging sand, so to speak.
But for now we sit stunned. I kind of felt this melting heart feeling when we sat across the desk from a doctor who was telling us "it's cancer". Stunned and frightened and wondering what to do. I think a lot of your listeners may be feeling that way today, Jerry.
I have an appointment from 9-10 and I sure wish I didn't have to miss your first hour after the election. I wish you well. You must be feeling an awful lot like the losing coach after the Superbowl
