This is classic liberalism. Food stamps are a tool to help the poor; they're an economic driver. Newt Gingrich was accused of racist language when he called President Obama "the Food Stamp President." It's a title he should wear with honor. Clearly the federal government sees SNAP as a program that can grow the economy. Of course, were this true, it would make sense to give everybody food stamps.
Sadly, I'm not so sure liberals would disagree with that thought. When President Obama said "the private sector was doing fine" there was much more there than appeared. He believes you grow the economy by growing government jobs and government handouts. Liberals seemed determined to push America to the next step, Eurosocialism, before Europe goes over the cliff.
It's not even a matter of safety net versus hammock. It's a belief that this type of handout can drive the economy. And it's frightening.
