In a segment after the Super Bowl, I said that this spot touched people because despite its satirical intent, it felt all too possible to many of us. Take this paragraph:

There was a time when Americans were thought capable of deciding for themselves what to do with their coffee grounds or whether to carry groceries home in paper or plastic bags. It isn’t only in San Francisco, and it isn’t only when it comes to “green’’ issues, that such mundane or personal choices are being supplanted by government coercion. One thin slice at a time, liberties we used to take for granted are replaced with mandates from above. Rather than leave us free to choose, Big Brother increasingly makes the choice for us: On trans fats. On gambling. On smoking. On bicycle helmets. On health insurance.

Last week I proposed court penalties for parents if their children repeatedly, and I stress repeatedly, cause trouble. Some listeners thought that amounted to "Nanny Nation." To the contrary, I was suggesting punishment if parents left their kids to society to discipline. We've always expected parents to be responsible; well until the last 50 years or so. I don't care what techniques parents use to raise their kids; I'm interested in the results. Telling you how many Big Macs you can eat is waaaaay different than what I was proposing.
