I see the best Northern Lights pictures online all the time..don't you? I've tried like crazy for 12-15 years to photograph them..but no luck. Part of my problem is that I live in a city and the other..I rarely use a tripod. I'm more of a "shoot from the hip" kinda photographer for events. So when I heard about an "electromagnetic storm hitting Earth's atmosphere"..I knew it was time to try again. I went outside 3 times..on the finally try I still wasn't seeing the Northern Lights but I thought.."what the heck..I'll just take a picture to see what happens." It blew my mind! I looked on the back of the camera and there was this picture. So while I couldn't see the Northern Lights with the naked eye..I could capture it with a DSLR. Settings for this...being in town, no tripod..ISO 4000, shutter at a second and a half, at f2.8 with a 24-70mm lens on a Nikon D700.
