  • Stuck in an Amusement Park in a Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“A dream is a short journey into the unconscious." - Diane Von Furstenberg

    Dear Lauri,
I dreamt that I was lost in an amusement park and couldn't get out of the park to go home. It was like being in a place with no exit, it just continued on and on.   – Karen 38, Denver, CO
Lauri: Are you in a situation or state of mind in waking life that you can't get out of? The amusement park suggests that it is a situation that ought to be thrilling and enjoyable but perhaps you've grown tired of it. Something has happened to the point it is no longer fun. Your dream is trying to show you that the situation or mindset WILL go on and on and on until you do something about it.
Karen replies:  Good insight! In February of 2009 my husband and I decided to allow my best friend into our relationship, forming a triad. For the first year and a half it was great, and even I in my skepticism and fear found myself really happy with this new fire in our relationship and pleasantly surprised at how good it felt. But for the past 6 months, the fire has all but gone out, and I can tell she wants to pull away but somehow salvage our friendship. The romance is gone between her and my husband.  Sex has stopped. They don't get along with each other, but both get along with me just fine (my husband and I fight about her often). I am the "glue" holding the triad together. But I am tired of it. I am tired of defending him to her. I am content going back to being just friends with her and back to my normal marriage, but my husband doesn't want to let her go, and if I pull the trigger to end the whole thing it's possible it could end my marriage too. So what was once fun and thrilling is now not fun at all and more of a burden than a joy.

  • Being Chased by a Giraffe in Your Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“The waking mind is thinking inside the box; the dreaming mind is thinking outside the box." - Professor David Kahn

    Dear Lauri,
I had a dream I was being chased by a giraffe. He never caught me though! What does that mean? -  Betsy, 25, New Haven, IN
Lauri: We often have a menagerie of animals that inhabit our dreams. In waking life, each specific animal has their own specific behavior they are known for: dogs are loyal, cats are independent, elephants never forget.  The characteristics that we project onto animals often appear in our dreams in the form of that animal in order to show us our own current actions and behavior, or to show us how the actions and behavior of someone else is directly affecting us.  That being said, your dream animal is a giraffe. They are best known for the characteristic of a very long neck. Are you “putting your neck out for someone?” And are you avoiding having to do this? I ask because when we are chased in a dream it can always be connected to running away from an obligation or issue in waking life. The message is that you can’t run from this issue forever. It’s time to make a decision.
Betsy replies:  Oh most definitely! I didn't even think of anything like that! My fiancée and I share his car and it's been down & needing a new engine. I've been the only one trying to make sure it is fixed, everything short of the financial part, which I'm constantly worried I will have to take care of also. Your interpretation was dead on! Thank you so much!
Fascinating Dream Fact: Elephants sleep standing up, but lie down when they enter REM sleep.

  • Black Goo in the Shower

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“The function of dreams is to maintain a correct balance in our lives. A dream puts us back into proper balance. It comes to reveal, not to hide." - Dr. John Baumgold
    Dear Lauri,
Last night I dreamed that black goo was running down the walls of my shower and a black bear was trying to chew through the ceiling in my bedroom!!   - Nora, Atlanta, GA
Lauri: When colors stand out in a dream you need to pay attention to them because they are often connected to a waking life emotion. Black in a dream usually refers to negative emotions, something you have a bad feeling about. That being said, the black goo in your dream seems to be about some negative, perhaps sticky, situation you have not been able to cleanse yourself of, hence it being in the shower. The black bear suggests this is something that has been somewhat hard to "bear," and it is not only eating away at you but is also something that has been "hanging over your head," just as the bear was eating away at the ceiling. Do you know what it is? The bedroom means this is either connected to an intimate relationship (boyfriend, husband) or it is something that is keeping you up at night.
Nora replies:  Well that makes TOTAL sense! I am aware that two friends/co-workers are having an affair and it is indeed a sticky situation. I also know both of their spouses. I left that job in December but the female half of this affair is always asking my insight. I keep trying to tell her it's a bad idea. And to make matters worse, the cheating husband's wife had a baby two days ago. Aaaaaaaah!!  Thanks Lauri, I really appreciate the insight.
Lauri replies: Oh my goodness! So both people are married to someone else? That is sticky. And it is sticking to you because she won’t leave you alone about it. Maybe you should tell her you will have nothing to with her so long as she's sleeping around behind her husband's back. Your dreams are likely to continue nagging you about this situation until you disengage yourself from it. Good luck.

  • Catching Someone in Bed in a Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“All the things one has forgotten scream for help in dreams.- Elias Canetti
    Dear Lauri,
I had a dream last night that I caught, by surprise, my son-in-law and daughter making love in my bed.  All I remember is that he was butt naked!  What does that mean?   - Dianna 58, Isleton, CA
Lauri: Ha!  Well, your son in law may not necessarily be playing himself... but first, let’s assume he is himself in this dream.  Has he recently "revealed" anything to you?  Has he opened up or "bared" his soul to you at all?  Usually, nudity in dreams is about feeling embarrassed, vulnerable or exposed OR about openness and honesty, having nothing to hide.  If that's not the case, it may be that your daughter and son-in-law represent a younger version of you and your husband or current relationship.   Have things become a little hum-drum or even non-existent in the bedroom?  Your dream may be telling you that you need to bring back that fresh vitality into your bed… naked buttocks included!
Dianna replies:  Lauri, Lauri, Lauri. I think you are right on!  I laughed because I think your second explanation hits the nail right on the head!!  I have recently gotten out of a five years relationship with my boyfriend who is 20 years younger than me.  I have been thinking about him a lot lately and miss him!  As a matter of fact, we are friends only lately, no bodily contact!  We went to the car races on Saturday night and he was looking very good to me!!
    Fascinating Dream Fact:
According to a story on Foxnews.com, a British man dreamed of an unfamiliar phone number so he decided to call it. It belonged to a gal he had never met.  Long story short, five years later they married!

  • Popping a Zit in a Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“Dreams are nature's answering service - don't forget to pick up your messages once in a while." - Sarah Crestinn
    Dear Lauri,
I had a dream last night that I had a zit on my stomach. When I popped it, blood just started to gush out…  and no one cared!   -  Monika 33, Van Wert, OH
Lauri: When a woman dreams of her stomach she must first see if she can connect it to any weight or body image issues.  If this is not the case with you, then the stomach is more about your ability to “stomach” or tolerate a waking life issue. Which seems to fit you right now? Are you really focused on your weight and body image, or is something going on that has been hard for you to stomach? The zit is another clue. A zit is a blemish, something unappealing that we want to get rid of as soon as possible. What unappealing issue has blemished your life lately? Is your weight a blemish on who you are? Your dream is also giving you some very valuable insight! The blood gushing out represents all the energy you are wasting on this issue. It has been bleeding you emotionally and psychologically! Notice how no one cared in the dream? That's because YOU are the only one focused on your weight or on this issue that is hard for you to stomach. Everyone else around you couldn’t give a flip. They love you EXACTLY as you are. The message of this dream is to pop this negative self image. It’s been draining you for too long.
Monika replies:  Wow. Both fit. I do have a weight issue and my boyfriend has been acting strange lately. I’m thinking it’s because he doesn’t like my weight. I think about this a lot. Thank you.

  • Crushed By a Piece of a Breaking Bridge

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“Although the events that appear to take place in dreams are illusory, our feelings in response to dream events are real." - Stephan LaBerge.
    Dear Lauri,
I dreamed that up in the sky there were multiple bridges and they started to break. Pieces were landing on people who were getting crushed. It was very graphic with blood and body parts flying all over the place. Then all of a sudden I got hit with a falling piece and I ended up at a mall getting my picture taken. I was told to wait because I'm from the east coast and the west coast people do things different.
      – Dave 47, Syracuse, NY
Lauri: The bridges in the sky suggest you have high hopes for something, perhaps something that would be a "bridge" to something better than where you are now in some area of your life. But alas, the bridges are falling apart, which means you must feel something in your life is falling apart and hopes are being dashed.  What has "crushed" you lately? Or crushed someone around you? All the body parts seem to suggest that you are dismembering yourself from some group or are severing ties in some way. And all the blood and carnage are representative of the angst this issue is causing within you. At the end of the dream you are told to wait. That means there is something you must be patient about right now.  In other words, take your time. Do not rush this.
Dave replies:  I'm thinking of starting my own business after 22 years of working for my current employer.  I think it would crush him to know that I will be leaving, and yes, I would agree that it is causing quite a bit of angst within me.

    Fascinating Sleep Fact:
Medical researchers have discovered that snorers burn as many as 373 more calories during sleep each night than people who sleep more soundly.  That’s about as much as a person would burn during 30 minutes of vigorous exercise!

  • Dead People Moving their Graves in a Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“Dreams guide and help us after we set goals and ideals for our lives.- Edgar Cayce.
    Dear Lauri,
I had the craziest dreams last night. Dead people didn't like where they were buried so they moved to another gravesite. And then my mother disowned me because I wouldn't go to church even though I was sick. It was just crazy!   - Julie 31, Nashville, TN
Lauri: What seemingly "dead, over and done with" issue has begun making movement in your life again? Some idea or issue YOU buried and put in the past has come to the surface again, which is causing you to make some rearrangements in your life because YOU are not happy.  Do you know what it is? Your mom disowning you is very likely connected to anger you have with yourself. Are you mad at yourself for not being a mom yet? Or are you a mom and if so are you displeased with yourself in that regard? Or are you not taking good enough care of yourself? Not going to church indicates you have lost faith in yourself. I believe your dream is showing you that losing faith or hope is unhealthy.
Julie replies: WOW! How do you do that? Yes, I'm mad at myself for not being a mom yet and I don't think it will ever happen and yes I'm displeased with myself for not taking good enough care of myself. When I was a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals but I wasn't strong in science so I "put that dream to rest". Then the other day I realized that I could be a vet tech instead and am seriously thinking about going back to school to be one. This all makes sense.

  • Shooting your Cat in a Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away."
    - "These Dreams" by Heart
    Dear Lauri,

Last night, I had a horrible dream that I shot my Siamese cat, once in the back and then twice in the back of the neck.  He stared at me as he died.  It was spooky and so wrong!  I would never hurt him.  Why would I dream of shooting my cat?   - Carol, Wausau, WI
Lauri: Cats in a woman's dream often symbolize her sexuality... her inner "sex kitten," if you will.  What's going on in the intimacy department?  Do you fear that you have "killed off" or have sabotaged that part of your life? Cats can also symbolize your pride and independence.  Has your pride been wounded recently?  You should also ask yourself if you or if someone around you has been exhibiting "catty" behavior, you know, gossip, which is most likely the case since shooting in dreams is all about wounding words and criticism.  You’re the gunman here so this dream shows your desire and need  to put an end to this situation.
Carol replies: Actually, there are a lot of hurtful words in my world. Some co-workers are gossiping about me, saying that I will be quitting my career after I get married in June.  It's very cruel and insensitive.  I feel attacked and it's been really upsetting to me.  I want to tell these people to BITE IT, but out of professionalism, I am choosing to remain quiet.  I think the dream hit it right on the mark!
    Fascinating dream fact:
German chemist Fredrich August von Kekule claimed that he discovered the ring-
shaped chemical structure of benzene because of a dream he had about a snake
biting its own tail in 1865.

  • Stepping on Money in your Flip Flops

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“Sleep is the glue that binds new information into the brain.- Robert Stickgold, Ph.D
    Dear Lauri,
I'm not sure what all was happening in the dream but I remember being in flip flop sandals and walking around a pool stepping on all these bills. They weren't specific amounts, just lots of big green money bills. – Ellie 31, KS
Lauri: Money in a dream is often connected to your own self worth, the value you and others place upon you. Anything going on that is causing you to feel worthy of good things? The flip flops are interesting. Have you been flip flopping on anything or do you feel any one around you has flip flopped?  The pool might be about something you are ready to "dive right into" rather than taking your time.  But I believe the fact that you are stepping on the money suggests that this is something you need to take "one step at a time."  All good things come to those who wait, as they say.
Ellie replies: I have been looking for a new job since May. I've applied everywhere, had a couple first dates, but no one has sealed the deal. There have been a couple flip flops... more in the sense of I'd hear from people and they'd sound interested in hiring me or at least interviewing, and then they'd change their mind.  My last job (a really bad one) was a total flip flop where I was promised a decent raise but then by the time I got the job, there was suddenly no money to give me. I had a job interview yesterday, the second with a company I am really interested in.  After the job interview, I got a call that they are short handed next week and want to audition me on two shifts!  Details are being ironed out now and I should get another call today.  So yes, I am ready to "dive" into this job!

  • Nursing a Baby in your Dream

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
“He who has learned aright about the signs that come in sleep will find that they have an important influence over all things.”   - Hippocrates
    Dear Lauri,
I have recurring dreams about my ex husband.  In those dreams we are still married and the children are little (they're both in college now).  And in my dream last night my son was a baby and I was nursing him.   – Rae 51, Glendale, CA
Lauri: Your dream might mean that you long for the old days when you were a happy family. But on a deeper level, perhaps there is something new happening in your life that you need to "nurture" as though it were a newborn, in order for it and for you to reach your full potential. We'll often dream of babies when we start a new project or relationship. You may also want to ask yourself if you might be "babying" your son too much.  No matter how old they get, they are still a baby in our eyes, aren't they?

Rae replies:  You are right on with your assessment of what my dream might mean.  I am in a place in my life right now where I think I need to nurture myself.  And, (according to his sister anyway) I do baby my son too much.  Thanks for your input.

    Fascinating Dream Fact:
Noticing colors in your dreams?  Colors represent how you are feeling at the time of the dream. For example, blues and grays point to sadness.  Green often means jealousy, yellow can mean you are fearful of something in waking life and red indicates anger or caution.

  • Having Dinner with President Bush

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
    Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was having dinner with President Bush and my parents.  I wanted a cup of coffee but my mom wanted me to wait until the president had his first.  The president got up and started doing the dishes.  Someone let his dogs in and I was playing and cuddling them and getting lots of dog kisses.  The dog I was cuddling was green! Then my alarm went off and I sat up in bed wondering who has a green dog? And why President Bush?   - Lori 53, Council Bluff, IA
Lauri: Bush is a president that is no longer in power so he may represent a part of yourself that is no longer in charge. Have you relinquished your authority or power over someone or something recently? Is there something you are no longer presiding over? Bush having the coffee first suggests that it is time to wake up this part of you so you can start presiding over your life again.  Bush is also doing the dishes. This is typically a mom activity so this may have to do with your own role as mom, if you are a mother. Or, it suggests you are doing some sort of mental cleansing, clearing away frustrations, something like that. The dogs may point to a relationship, someone you have loyalty and companionship with... but one is green! Most often green points to jealousy and less often points to growth. Since this dream seems positive and you are receiving lots of kisses, I’m betting this is about a relationship that is growing and rewarding you.
Lori replies: Wow! This is amazing. Several relationships in my life have been growing. My husband has been recovering from a painful addiction and is making amazing progress! We are closer than we have ever been. I was completely powerless over his addiction. I do feel like I have been woken up about my life in general. The mom issue... I have been reconnecting with my daughter after a long absence and it’s really nice.

  • Chewing on Broken Glass

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg
    Dear Lauri,
I was eating some food with this guy I have a love-hate relationship with. I suddenly noticed I was chewing on a piece of broken glass. I gave it to the guy, who acted concerned, and he took action to go report the incident.  Very quickly he returned and I can remember just spitting and vomiting out a pile of glass that was almost as tall as I was. I couldn’t stop it from forming in my mouth. I just kept constantly spitting. It was really weird.    - Kyra 37, Chicago, IL
Lauri: What your dream is showing you is that something you "hungered" for in waking life (which is most likely the relationship with this person), at first "fed" your needs and desires but now is causing you pain because certain hopes and ideals have been shattered (the broken glass).  You are chewing on the glass because chewing is a metaphor for thinking about something "chew on this" as they say.  Have you been thinking about speaking up to this person? You give him a piece of the glass because you must have offered up a piece of your mind to him in real life. The way he shows concern, takes it and reports it, seems to indicate that he came across to you as really caring about what you had to say and perhaps even promised to behave. But alas, his quick return in the dream means he quickly returned to his old ways.  And this is why, at that moment, you began vomiting... because you need to purge yourself of this unhealthy relationship immediately.  The more vomit, the more urgent it is. Might be best to move on from him so that glass is no longer a part of your dietary intake.
Kyra replies: Wow! You hit the nail on the head. I have not voiced my concerns to him yet, BUT there is a whole lot I have been holding in .  You really have helped to shine some light on my situation.
